My Life as a D3 Player: December 23 ‘09

It feels good to be writing for the site again. I have not posted any legitimate content to the site in a long time, but as always, I have a good reason for the delayed post; this time, it was finals.

Although I’m a sophomore in college, one thing I knew I’d have to get used to in leaving Colorado College was finals. Since Colorado College runs the block plan, students take one class (and therefore one final) at a time. This reduces the amount of stress at the end of each semester, so although I’d spent a full year in college before coming to Grinnell, I had never experienced the mind-rape that is college finals week.

Pretty much since Thanksgiving my classes dumped a consistently unbearable workload on me, and in addition to that I hosted football recruits two weekends in a row. Although hosting recruits makes it difficult to find time to write for the site, I’m happy to do it because I believe that I can have a positive impact on our program and on a young guy’s life by showing him what our team and our school are all about. Our coaches and players have been doing an excellent job recruiting so far this offseason, and I’m beyond excited about what we’ll be able to do next year with the kids we’re bringing in.

Although I’m always willing to work hard in school and in football, both on the personal and recruiting fronts, it took some time after finals to unwind and get back on my blogging grind. It feels good to be writing again, especially since this time around I’m doing it back in Colorado.

Friday was a fantastic day in that I saw the official end of finals, and I finally got to come home. This was a momentous occasion for me, since I’ve been working my butt off in one way or another since spring break. I got to spend six days at home in between my internship and my report date for training camp, but I spent the entire time packing for Grinnell. It still feels foreign to me to not have any form of schoolwork to worry about right now, but it feels great nonetheless.

The break also gives me the ability to reflect on everything I’ve done this year, which has been quite a bit. And although I am trying to relax a little bit, I’m working even harder for football. I’m still getting up at 6:00 AM to run, which is taking a little bit of getting used to here in Colorado because of the altitude. I’m still lifting hard, and I’m still determined to become the best football player I can possibly be. When this season ended, I gave myself a few days off and got back to work. I’m emboldened by the success I’ve enjoyed the last two years, and I know that if I can increase the intensity of my workouts I can be even more successful next season.

A lot of people ask for abstract things for Christmas: world peace, happiness, or perhaps even the proverbial two front teeth. I’m not asking for a great season next year; I’m putting in the work in all areas that will make my wishes a reality. I firmly believe we can be a force in the Midwest Conference, but Santa’s not going to bring us more wins. As trite as it sounds, only hard work and believing in ourselves and our coaches will accomplish anything.
